For today’s younger generation the mantra of success is - doing something which one enjoys or cherishes the most – making buzz all over. The only reason why this makes a huge difference with today’s generation is because people of today’s generation do not believe in getting over burdened with responsibilities which they cannot commit for and they follow their wish wholeheartedly with complete dedication. And this attitude of today’s youngsters set the platform for the young entrepreneurs, who are willing to risk it all for their big dream and big idea for business.

On April 25, 2011 IIT Delhi witnessed the presence of Indian Telecom Mogul, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman & group CEO of Bharti Enterprises. Speaking on the theme of the session ‘Dare to Dream’ Mr. Mittal delved upon his own journey as a first generation entrepreneur. Talking about the initial days of his journey as an entrepreneur he spoke about how ‘creatively’ he surmounted government license & permit raj and controls.

Building upon his image of an entrepreneur always willing to explore latest technological developments for commercial exploitation, he cited examples from his initial days of struggle when he explored opportunities offered by imported gadgets of that time. Adding to the list of technological innovations ascribed to him, he shared the long list of technological experiences that he brought to Indian consumers right from the first mobile generators imported from Japan to first telephone devices made in private sector in India.

Touching upon the topic of academia and industry interaction, he clamoured for very active academia-industry interaction conducive for the flow of knowledge both ways.

Realising the audience hunger about the Zain deal, Mr. Mittal shared his insights that went into his group taking over the African telecom operator. He also shared the foresights predicted by his strategy and finance team for the new member in the family. Entertaining the audience’s questions, Mr. Mittal stated his never ending hunger for new challenges as the reason behind his very high energy levels and enthusiasm towards his work. Breaking the mould of glamorous high flying industrialist, he shared with the audience all the homework which went into the culmination of the Zain deal which involved even staying for days in almost uninhabitable areas of Africa.

As his concluding statement he advised young audience to pursue only and only what they like, what they feel passionate about. He quoted passion for their respective works as the most dominant trait of the most spectacularly successful people.

Guest Lecture: M-Governance in Healthcare in India

India even after more than 60 years of its independence is still struggling to provide access to quality healthcare for most of the citizens especially those in rural areas and those belong to backward sections of the society. But now lot of efforts has been made to improve the situation using the intervention of technology.

On Wednesday April 27^th, Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi brought together stalwarts which have taken such initiatives in India on a common platform to discuss their initiatives as well as the change that they want to bring.

The session kicked off with the project ‘Manthan’ team consisting of Mr. Amod Kumar (I.A.S.), Dr.Monica and Mr. Girdhari Bora. This four-year, $4 million initiative—funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—aims to improve the health of mothers and newborns in Uttar Pradesh, which apparently has the highest percentage of maternal and neonatal deaths in India. The distinguished speakers gave a presentation explaining how their organization functions.

Next up were Mr. Mayur & Ms. Ritu Maheshwari (I.A.S.) who are currently working on project ’Aarogyam – India’s unique community based end-to-end digital health mapping & pregnancy tracking programme’. Initiated in Bagpat & JP Nagar districts of U.P., Aarogyam aims to provide healthcare services to citizens at their doorsteps.

These presentations provided insights about their initiatives, the challenges that they faced, the major steps taken by them and improvement that their efforts have resulted in. The session concluded on a high where lots of questions were put up which were answered equally well by the panel

Guest Lecture on Energy Efficiency

Mr. Sandeep Garg from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Ministry of Power, Govt. of India) visited DMS on April 21^st, 2011. Mr. Garg shared some of the thought provoking facts from the energy conservation sector as well as his experiences of leading the war to bring some of the most fruitful and beneficial changes mandate for the socio-economic improvement and waste reduction.

“The energy demand is increasing due to rising incomes, accelerated Industrialization, urbanization and population growth” he cited. He also talked about the various positives coming out of Energy Act 2001. As part of Standards and Labeling Programme, Mr. Garg talked about the concept of Voluntary Labels for refrigerators and air conditioners. His talk was more of an eye-opener for us as it introduced the nuances of latest standards of energy efficiency.

It is a well known fact that the importance of invention and innovation was cited centuries back. Just like, the phrase above explicates that difficult situations inspire ingenious solutions; students of IIT throughout their academic curriculum take up challenging problems life and try to solve them through their intelligence under the guidance of vastly experienced faculty. In return the IITs reward their hard work through annual OPEN HOUSE DAY – a one - day event dedicated to provide an insight into path-breaking research work, student projects and the numerous advanced facilities and laboratories available in IIT Delhi.

For the seventh consecutive year Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) exhibited an extensive collection of innovative research and product development projects at its annual open house, i2tech 2011 on Saturday April 23, in the premises of IIT Delhi. The projects proved to be a real treat to the eyes of technology enthusiasts, students and colleagues from other technical Institutes, school children, industries and general public.

The Department of Management Studies also made its presence felt by demonstrating some the best projects of students. A total of 9 projects were shortlisted for exhibition. The projects were from various domains viz. market and marketing research, consultancy assignments, or related to IT & telecom sector, etc. and were for organizations like Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. PepsiCo, NSIC, to name a few.

Farewell '11 - Yeh Aakhri Alvida Na Ho...

Perhaps the above lines said it all. It’s that time of the year again when the budding managers realize that the end of their journey at DMS, IIT Delhi is in sight and reflects on all the good things that have happened over the past 2 years, the good times they had together and the wonderful moments that they shared.

As part of the DMS culture, the first year MBA students organized a farewell party for the Seniors on April 22, 2011. The half day event manifested numerous events like karaoke, mimicry, poems, etc. But the mother of all events was the Mr. & Ms. DMS where the contestants had to face the wackiest and weirdest of questions.

The evening was capped off with an astonishing DJ where both the batches displayed their moves together probably for the last time.

In the age of convergence, the prominent growth driver of MVAS would be the consumers’ desire of getting more from their mobile phone. “Mobile VAS industry in India is undergoing a lot of structural changes and is poised to grow and contribute greater revenues to the telecom industry in years to come” said Mr. Joby Babu.

The post lunch session of the confluence chaired by Prof. Vinaysheel Gautam threw light on the much talked about issue of “Mergers & Acquisition”. Prof Gautam in his very own remarkable way illustrated with various examples on how M&A between two organization has its own chemistry and its success depends on the special alchemy brought in by synergy.

Mr. Nitin Sood, CFO for PVR Ltd., the first to put forward his views pointed that Indian business being predominantly family owned is still in the initial phase of M&A compared to west. He identified, buoyancy in the Indian space and companies going public, as the major driving force behind companies going for M&A. He added that synergy is the magic wand that helps in revenue enhancement and cost savings.

Mr Gagan Bakhshi, Director M&A Interglobe Enterprises, too in his very witty style emphasized on synergies aspect and explained financial gain, revenue enhancement and cost saving impact of synergy among the companies involved in the deal.

Mr. Rajendra Nalam, Partner BMR advisors, explained how M&A opens new avenues to expand into but at the same time cautioned that M&A’s are not always a productive option specially in cases when the chemistry between the two entities is not great enough to carry the momentum for growth.

Mr. Alok Verma, Partner Technova, was next to put his views. He concentrated on Indian aspect of the business and M&A activities involving Indian Businesses. According to him M&A for Indian family run business is an added complex issue due to hidden assets and incomes. He also shed some light on Post merger issues like valuing hidden cash flows which are quite common in Indian Family business.

The Idea series-Confluence 11’, the much awaited business colloquium of Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi was conducted on 12^th of March. The event saw two sessions, a morning session having various industry leaders sharing their thoughts on the theme ““Rebranding: Mere Wardrobe Change or Absolute Personality Change””, and an afternoon session dwelling on “Mergers & Acquisition: Yielding Synergy or Exhausting Energy”.

Dr. Mahim Sagar, Assistant professor of marketing at DMS, in his opening note as session chair for morning symposium posited the three main challenges in the field of marketing viz. Inclusiveness, Sustainability & Innovation. “An organization should not only be able to sustain development through inclusiveness but also focus on constant innovation” said Dr. Sagar. He further added that rebranding should cover all the aspect of an organization’s business model.

The first speaker for the day Mr. Prasun Banerjee, Director Consumer Electronics at Haier Appliances, in an interactive approach filled with ample examples emphasized the need of maintaining the crux of the products and its original genetics during rebranding exercises rather than just cut-paste new ideas and practices.

Mr. Debashis Paul, Chief Growth Officer for India in the McCann global network was the next to speak. Mr Paul said that rebranding is the change of internal body with external phases like processes, leadership change, new business acquisition and merger, managed and directed by conscious and planned decisions. He concluded with the note that rebranding is not only mere personality change but it’s about a holistic change that marks a change in attitude as well.

Up next was Mr. Lakshmikant Gupta, CMO - LG electronics India. Mr. Gupta started off from the very basics of branding. “Organizations should be aware about what stage of product lifecycle are they, before going for rebranding” added Mr. Gupta. He emphasized on the fact that companies should identify all ‘touchpoints’ of consumer–organization interaction and take them into consideration while going for rebranding. Mr. Gupta finished off by pointing that rebranding is not just about changing the physical identity but managing and updating the customer’s experience as well.

The last speaker of the session was Mr. Krishnan Chatterjee, V.P. and Head of Global Marketing at HCL Technologies. Mr Chatterjee talked about the four basic layers in which rebranding can be done- Brand Identity, Brand positioning, Brand proposition and lastly Brand campaigning. He concluded the topic by stressing on the need to change the brand because the world is changing and Brand is becoming the business model.

A Day With Mr. Vikram Pandit

Last Week Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit, was on his maiden visit to India since he took over the global financial giant in 2007.His first stop was in Mumbai, where Citigroup hosted a cocktail reception in the glittering ballroom of the Taj Mahal Palace so he could meet some of his largest revenue generators, the firm's clients. He was in Delhi for the next two days (March 3^rd & 4^th, 2011) attending the spring meeting of the International Institute of Finance.

Pandit addressed the town hall style meeting in Delhi at the Imperial hotel, aglitter under three enormous chandelier, men and women from business schools across the city listened, with students from other cities beaming in via a videoconference feed. A total of 20 students represented DMS IIT Delhi in this meet.

And then started the volley of hard questions which were eventually handled pretty well by Mr. Pandit. Students in the audience were thrilled to be interacting with Pandit. Lokesh Bahety from DMS, IIT Delhi who has an internship lined up at Citigroup, applauded the wide variety of questions Pandit addressed. "The questions were from all verticals, and Sir took a lot of time to answer them," he said after the event.

Here is a fact to start with – While China's GDP is 3.8 times larger than India's, its production of machine tools, the 'mother industry' of manufacturing, is 55 times more! Clearly Indian manufacturing has failed to be an engine of growth.

On February 21, 2011 we had Prof. R. R. K. Sharma from IIT Kanpur amongst us to talk about various manufacturing strategies implemented by world’s leading manufactures. Prof. Sharma started with comparing the strategies adopted by US and Japanese firms. Several other concepts like Shop within a Shop (SWS), Plant within a Plant (PWP), Management by exception, etc. were discussed during the one and a half hour session.

ERP: Endless Research Program

There's always been a lot of buzz around ERP and the value it brings to businesses. But what exactly is ERP? How does it benefit businesses, particularly small and medium size organizations?

To answer all such questions we had Mr. Sangeet Kumar Gupta, Director, Finsys Infotech Limited on 16 Feb, 2011. Since its inception in 1992, Finsys is into the business of ERP software development and Implementation.

With over a decade of professional experience, Mr. Sangeet began his lecture by describing ERP as an ‘Endless Research Program’. He further added that as organizations today are more system driven then people driven, so need for an ERP system becomes that more important. By becoming the integrated information solution across the entire organization, ERP systems allow companies to better understand their business. With ERP software, companies can standardize their business processes and more easily enact best practices. By creating more efficient processes, companies can concentrate their efforts on serving their customers and maximizing profit.

During the latter half of the session Mr. Gupta talked about the difficulties that companies faced while ERP implementation viz. End user acceptability, Management of surplus commodities, Partial or full fledged ERP system, etc. In order to keep a check on such problems Mr. Gupta advocated the implementation of ERP solution in stages with a defined timeline.

All in all it was a very enriching session where students learnt a lot about the basic intricacies involved in ERP implementation

Memoirs 2011, DMS-IIT Delhi Annual Alumni Meet

Education is not only the driving force for a leader to move ahead in life but also the motivation to take an occasional pause and reflect back, connect with one’s alma mater and share the richness of one’s journey. The Annual Alumni Meet of the Delhi Chapter of DMS, IIT Delhi proved to be that pause.

The alumni meet was held under the chairmanship of the Head of Department Prof. Sudhir K. Jain on 12th February 2011 at Varuna Naval Ground. Members of the Faculty and students also attended the meeting.

It was indeed heartening to see so many alumni, especially from the initial batches. The three hour long event witnessed splendid performances from students. All-in-all, the evening resulted in sharing of reminiscent times, new networks built, rich experience shared and a lot of appreciation conveyed by the alumni to the present alumni committee for such an exemplary event management.

Student of DMS, wins Online Debate competition @ IIM Lucknow

Disagreeing with someone is not easy. Nor is it easy when someone disagrees with you. In fact, constructive disagreement could probably be classified as a serious skill, one that few of us truly possess.

IIM Lucknow came up with a unique idea of Online Debate – Treatise, that lets you get down and dirty in the brass tacks of intellectual challenge. The winner of the event, Aneesh Dubey shares his experience about the event-

“Any debater would be flabbergasted by the concept of an online- written debate, but having been a part of it I must congratulate the people who thought of such a novel concept; winning it only adds to the admiration I have for this format of debating.

A debate, hosted on Facebook was a surprise at first and an extremely enjoyable experience as round after round left the wall of the event ablaze with verbal petrol bombs.

The format was simple, contestants were given topics to debate, they submitted opening statements clarifying their stands, which went on the event page and then anyone was free to interject, the contestants then defended their arguments. The one who did it best – won.

But a debate, without voice modulation, and angry fists banging the desk sounds mundane – it wasn’t, on the contrary it tested the writing ability of the participants forcing them to incorporate all those characteristics of a debate into well written pieces - quite a treat for writers.

The topics were very relevant, ranging from the state of education in India to the imminent needs of the healthcare industry, not only did it provide immense learning but a very accurate measure of the state of affairs we face as a country.

I have no reservations when I say this that it might become one of the staple forms of debating soon.”

In order to look for Creme de la Creme , IIM Lucknow organized its flagship event 'The Next CEO' under the aegis of their annual fest- MANFEST '11. Aneesh Dubey a 1st year MBA student from DMS, IIT Delhi shares his experience pertaiing to the event.

"It is not often that you’re called to be a part of a group of possibly the best business school students in the country, and it is more gratifying when it is a competition to pick the best out of them. Who does not love a good challenge? Not me.

The Next CEO is the flagship event of IIM Lucknow’s annual management festival Manfest; it is, as they put it ‘the search for the best manager in the country’, they look pretty hard and the benchmarks are set very high.

The event was spread over a three day period with a multitude of events, both team and individual, testing possibly all traits which are expected in a visionary leader: acumen, rigour, determination, leadership, teamwork and top of all adaptability. The design of the events and their experience itself is so rewarding that by the end of the second day you’re not concerned who is going to win it, the means itself gets that rewarding.

The three days of the competition left me with a rich experience; a much better understanding of business than I can ever gain from reading case studies and best of all – a group of acquaintances which consisted some of the best and most learned people I’ve met.

It was amazing fun to be a part of the event, and the fact that I missed the first place by a very narrow margin, hence losing all claim to the princely prize money of 1 lakh Rupees, did not sadden me one little bit. I came a respectable second – though I wouldn’t have minded that 1 lakh going to my account."

The ambigram – an elegant irony, and yet the best depiction of the perpetuity of change, is the symbol of DMS’s annual management festival – PARIVARTAN.

Early each year when the fog of Delhi hasn’t started lifting, and its infamous cold is at a peak, the best brains of B-schools make their annual pilgrimage to Parivartan, with the hope to change the paradigms of management; to look in a new light what they’ve been studying, to pit their grey against the best of the country and of course to have some fun – a welcome break from their academic schedules.

Parivartan -2011 was a major success, with India’s top 20 schools participating. It was the biggest since its nemesis in 1997

The theme – change, this time focussed on new media, globalization, and evolution of CSR and agility of corporations. The gamut of competitions made the participants develop strategies for corporations to evolve with the changing business scenario, sell futuristic products on new age media, bring urban amnesties to the rural population and calculate the size and scope of corporate takeovers.

But it was not all work. The two day schedule was peppered with fun events that entertained the participants and audiences alike. Parivartan 2011 was also host to the Department’s annual Media Conclave. The Annual Media Conclave aims to bring to campus eminent media personalities to debate and deliberate over current issues both within and outside the purview of media.

This year’s media conclave saw the presence of Mr. Sameer Kapoor (CEO, NDTV India), Mr. Amitabh Shrivastava (Country Manager, Radio Netherlands Worlwide), Mr. Anurag Varma (Editor, TOI group), Mr. Gaurav Mishra (Director, Digital & Social Media, MSLGroup Asia) & Mr. Ved Vrat Giri (Owner, MyNews.in), talking about Citizen Journalism: Vigilance with Diligence. It was an enriching experience to the students of the department and also the visiting participants.

For two days, as the schedule continued to challenge and entertain the participants, the department was at its competitive best. The last evening, as the events hit their crescendo, the DJ party took all to a new high of celebration.

Parivartan 2011 ended on a high note, with inter-college relations improving and the participants departed with repeated invitations to students to visit their campuses. The festival was a great success and charged with that, the preparations for next year’s extravaganza would have to be comprehensive, for the benchmarks have been raised.

The mission of post-graduate educational institutions, business schools included, is to impart cutting-edge knowledge. This knowledge is generated through research. But what really constitutes research in a business school?

To assess the state of business research in India, Economic Times examined data on authorship of research by India-based authors for the period 1990-2009. ET chose a widely-accepted list of 40 journals that the Financial Times uses for ranking research at business schools in their annual global MBA rankings (www.ft.com).

That’s an honest question. What’s fund-a-mentally new about all this? How is it different from any of its predecessors?

To answers all such kinds of queries we had Dr. Ravi Sharma, Associate Professor from Nanyang Technoogical University, Singapore. He is also the principal investigator of the NRF-funded Special Interest Group on Interactive Digital Enterprise (SIGIDE). Dr. Sharma is currently working on Knowledge and Digital Economies. "Business Models and Pricing Strategies in the IDM Marketplace"

He started off the session by discussing some of the jargons like Prosumer Behavior, Electronic Word of Mouth, Consumer Generated Content (CGC), etc. He further added that “New media is all about “convergence.” It’s convergence of devices, convergence of formats (digital data), and convergence (or blurring) of ways we use media that were formerly much more distinctly separated, namely, production and consumption.” During the latter half of the session, Dr. Sharma introduced the ADVISOR model on which his team is currently working. The ninth annual International Smart-Sourcing Conference was held on January 5-6, 2011 at Department of management Studies, IIT Delhi to examine the effects and benefits of outsourcing on the global economy.

The main focus of the conference, Sourcing of Services Worldwide: Impact on Global Economic Divide, was debated and discussed by industry experts and researchers from India, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, United Kingdom, and USA. The conference saw participation of delegates from Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the U.S.

The conference was hosted by the Center for Global Outsourcing (CGO) and directed by Dr. Shailendra Palvia, principal of CGO and a professor of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. According to Dr. Palvia, an increasing number of companies are opting to outsource critical business operations and projects to independent workers, consultants and specialized companies. "In the increasingly level playing world, the benefits of global sourcing are many fold," said Dr. Palvia. "First, countries and companies around the world can focus on their core competence rather than being spread too thin in all areas. For example, U.S.A. can continue to be the leader in innovation. Second, in the long run, global sourcing phenomenon is going to bridge the economic disparity among nations of the world, thus paving the way for more peaceful cooperation and co-existence."

Mr. Som Mittal, President NASSCOM discussed the role of NASSCOM in the evolution of global smart sourcing. He said,” Outsourcing has played a pivotal role in improving the cost efficiency of business organizations and has catapulted them into a transformation phase”. Furthermore he added that global outsourcing has helped organizations to focus on their core business.

The two day conference witnessed numerous eminent speakers sharing their thoughts on contemporary issues.

The most significant driver for robust growth of an economy is the provision of a quality infrastructure. Infrastructure projects require huge capital and the rate of returns is slow – this brings in the most logical problem – who will invest? How much? The most recent solution to this problem seems to be the PPP or the Public Private Partnership model that successfully combines the huge investment capabilities of the public sector with the professionalism of the private sector.

On 26^th November we had Mr. Punit Malik, Managing Director (Capital Finance) from Yes Bank to share his views about PPP in India, particularly in infrastructure domain. The guest lecture, one of the many held on campus as a part of the Idea Series focused on various aspects of PPP in the infrastructure sector with dedicated focus on the multiple financial vehicles and tools that are employed in the sector along with the role of banks in such projects.

The session started with a brief introduction about the need of a PPP in long term financing. The one and half hour lecture covered most of the issues related to PPP viz. the need for risk sharing, modes of partnership, major failures and their impact, etc. In all, the lecture provided a brief insight about the scope and future in infrastructure financing.

During interaction with the students, some pertinent questions were discussed which included concepts like project ratings and the degree of involvement of banks.

As the global workforce struggles to keep pace with hiring needs, demands for talented employees exceeds the supply, leaving many organizations wondering what strategies to adopt to ensure that they can retain and even expand their workforces to maintain competitive advantage.

On 17^th, November we had with us Mr. Ravi to share his ideas on this contemporary issue of talent crisis. Speaking on the topic he talked about the talent management practices in biotech sector and Biocon in particular. He started the lecture by defining talent as a recurring pattern of thoughts, feelings or behaviour that can be productively applied. He emphasized on the need of talent acquisition as more and more companies are getting into new areas and thus requiring a lot more people with the requisite skills.

Regarding the talent management programs in organisations he said that the focus should be on talent grooming rather than talent creation as one can’t create talent. Firms should try to understand what all things attract employees and what are the choices available to them? In all, the most important thing is the way an organisation market itself in front of potential employees.

During the concluding moments Mr. Ravi discussed about the booming career opportunities in biotech sector for mba graduates. During the QnA session lots of quality questions were put by the budding managers from the Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi, which were very nicely answered by our eminent guest.

Lecture by Dr. Vinay Bharat-Ram, CEO, DCM Ltd. – # 2

Continuing from where the eminent visiting faculty left during his last lecture regarding the impact of exchange rate on economies worldwide, Dr. Vinay said that fluctuations in the exchange rate exert a powerful impact on exports, imports and the trade balance. A high and rising exchange rate tends to depress exports; boosts import and thus deteriorate the trade balance.

Moving forward he discussed the macroeconomic freshwater-saltwater dichotomy wherein, the government has an important 'discretionary' role to play in order to actively stabilize the economy over the business cycle according to saltwater economic theory. Whereas according to the freshwater school of thoughts it is the uttermost importance of government economic policies for both the economy's abilities to respond to shocks and for its long-term potential to provide welfare to its citizens.

He further explained ‘Marginal propensity to consume’ by explaining the concept with the help of self explanatory example. Other topics like the ‘multiplier factor’ were also covered and there implications were given on both global and Indian level.

The last half an hour of the enlightening session was focused on the detailed analysis of how the global meltdown of 2008 was a result of conceptual negligence of numerous investment and financial analysts.

On the whole it was a session where Dr. Bharat-Ram talked on wide range of topics covering both contemporary and historical issues and theories related to macroeconomics.

The quality of education being imparted at any b school has a direct correlation with the quality of permanent and visiting faculty it has. At Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi guest lectures from industrial experts are an integral part of regular academics. On 12^th Nov, 2010 we had amongst us, the Honorary Visiting Professor from DCM Ltd., Dr. Vinay Bharat-Ram. Dr. ram has authored numerous papers in Indian and foreign journals. His Books Titled, “Import Substitution, Exchange rates and Economic Development”, and "The Theory of the Global Firm” have been published by Oxford University press. Commenting on his remarkable work, Professor Amartya Sen, the Nobel Laureate in Economics, called his latter book “an imaginative book with a bearing on pure theory as well as real world”.

Dr. Bharat-Ram started with some examples devaluation of Indian rupee by a substantial amount during the late 60s and the export problems faced by Japan in their automobile sector. The whole idea of discussing these crises was, to prove the point that exchange rate plays a very important role in modern days of industries worldwide. He also gave some more examples on how exchange rate has altered the complexion of industries in India in particular. The session concluded with a mathematical analysis of the import substitution rate and its impact on the profit of a firm.

All in all it was a very interactive and educative session. Hope to gain more from his insights during the second lecture in the series on 15^th Nov, 2010

My God Died

I just finished a very disturbing book called 'Riot after Riot'. A collection of essays describing the major communal conflagrations in the country since the 1970s. Written by the eminent journalist M.J Akbar, the book is beautiful in language and raw in what the language expresses. I was shaken, rather I still am. The poem is an aftermath of this reading experience.

It was just a book, non-fiction
picked up, to satisfy a reading addiction,
my hands ran red, blood clotted and fresh
and the glue smelt - of rotting flesh.

scalding phrases of deliberate fires,
revealing truths of diabolical liars,
swords,knives,spears,stones, guns,
dead parents, killed children, raped nuns,

kerosene,LPG, moltovs, en masse rage
a murder book - page by page
a million answers for why a man dies,
the only weapon always used - lies.

there are idols,or there are none,
they read the namaaz, I sing a bhajan,
but religion is just a clever decoy,
the reverred scapegoat, the indicting ploy

hatered is cleverly festered,
wounds made, irritatingly pestered,
people killed, with a random roll of dice
a bigger move, a pawn sacrifice

halfway through and my belief crumbled,
asked about my opinion - mumbled,
a few more pages and I was in a daze,
lifelong convictions, lost in a bloody haze,

I knew the truth, at the revelation I cried,
I've always judged, but now I didn't know my side

Continuing the tradition of providing its students a platform to interact and learn from some of the most experienced and eminent personalities of the contemporary industrial world, the Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi organized its flagship event, ‘Building India Inc (BII) - 2010’on 30^{th &} 31^st of October at Vishwakarma Bhawan, IIT Delhi. BII is the annual seminar series of DMS, which attempts to integrate the government, the corporate and the academia to throw light on the issues and challenges faced by the nation, and share the experiences with the larger audience. BII’10, the two day event, was divided into four sessions each with a different subject under the umbrella theme – ‘INDIA INSPIRED: RESURGENCE OF THE GOLDEN BIRD.’ The BII’10 had Coal India Ltd. as its principle sponsor, KPMG as its Knowledge partner, MBA Universe as the Official Management Portal, and Financial Express as the official media partner.

The event was inaugurated by the session chair Prof Sushil from DMS IIT Delhi, Ms. Vijaylakshmi K. Gupta, Member of Finance, DoT, Mr. D.R. Mehta, Chairman Polymedicure (Ex-Chairman, SEBI), and Mr. Akhil Bansal, COO, KPMG. Starting the event, Prof. Sushil said that its time that we should carefully look upon and analyze what practices are being followed in India which provide impetus to its tremendous growth, and as a research driven department, the faculty of DMS looked forward towards the sustainability of this growth. Dr. D R Mehta, the Chairman of Polymedicure and the former chairman of SEBI, said that India needs to focus on balanced capitalism rather than blindly imitating the west, so as to resurrect as the golden bird that it was in ancient times. Ms. Vijaylakshmi Gupta, explained at length the critical role that the telecom industry of India, the fastest growing industry in the world, in the development of India. Mr. Akhil Bansal described the transforming trajectory of Indian economy and its impeccable growth story, and stressed on the need to have inclusive growth.

The first session, which had the subject, ‘PAVING THE PATH TOWARDS: SUPER POWER INDIA’, began with a speech from session chair Prof. S. S. Yadav who highlighted the changes in the perceived meaning of the word ‘superpower’, and said that albeit the figures of growth rate and foreign investment give us a rosy picture of India’s future, but there are a gamut of issues like high unemployment rate, trade balance deficit, poverty, etc that need to be addressed. Dr. D. R. Mehta shared parts of his vast experience and underlined the importance of culminating innovation, apart from developing sound infrastructure and education framework. Mr. Surinder S. Kohli, Independent Director of Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Ltd, stated that India has a few positives like demographic advantage, sound banking system and stock markets along with a robust economic structure, which it can leverage to earn the superpower status. Mr. Surajit Banerjee, the Senior Vice President of DLF, gave insights about the transformations in the Indian corporate culture from an organizational point of view, underlining the importance of specialization of employees in a particular vertical function of the firm. Lastly, Mr. Anindo Deb Burman, the GM-HR of Maruti Suzuki, spoke about the changing aspects of India towards liberalization and underlined the importance of the mantra ‘think global, act local’ which had helped India survive the recent global recession. The session closed with an interactive question and answer round.

The advent of second session saw a distinguished panel that gave valuable insights on ‘INDIA WAY: LEADING LIGHT’. The session was kick started by a presentation on the key operation details of Coal India Limited, by Dr. A. K. Dhar, the General Manager of CIL. The session chair, Dr. Harish Chowdhary, gave a brief introduction on the subject and invited Dr. Ashish Chauhan, the Deputy CEO of BSE, started with the note that India had drastically transformed in economic and social aspects, post liberalization in 1991. The next speaker, Mr. Salil Kapoor, the CEO of NDTV India He then shifted his focus towards potential rural market provides in India. He further said that real India is rural India where most of the population and a big potential market live. Mr. Manoj Aggarwal, the CEO of Delhi Gurgaon Super Connectivity Ltd, urged that we should be vigilant about the path we decide to take on as an economy and a society. This was followed an informative session by Mr. Sameer Kapoor who started by saying that no strategy can remain static and it has to change with time, requirement and challenge. He then brought to notice CWG games the Indian medal winners were mostly from rural areas where they do not have access to basic amenities. This is what he termed as the ‘India way’. Mr. Anil Patni was the next speaker who threw light on the importance of solar Power and the opportunities it provided as it constitutes only a very small portion of India power production.

The third session, based on the age old issue, ‘INDIA’s DEMOGRAPHY: DIVIDEND or SURCHARGE’, was chaired by Prof Kanika Bhal, who opened the session by saying that the ‘mouths to feed’ have become the ‘minds, hands and feet to work’ in the last 20 years. Mr. Naveen Coomar, VP and Global HR Head, Impetus Infotech, emphasized that India is young country with one-fifth of the world’s population residing in India, but a major part of which is unemployable. This, he said, makes the Indian demography appear like a huge surcharge but in reality, it is a potential dividend, if we nurture the competencies of the Indian youth. The next speaker, Ms. Geethaa Ghaneckar, Director-OD & Learning, Raymond, made an insightful presentation and stated inclusive growth, focus on female population, development of Central India, and managing regional politics as the key factors of making our demography a dividend. Mr. Rajiv Sehdev, VP-HR Moserbear enlightened the audience with his interesting speech in which he said that India was a centre of knowledge and excellence and also lack of action, and stated that it was imperative for India to utilize the huge talent in the rural sector. This illustrious speech was followed by an illuminating presentation by Mr. Praveen Kumar Sinha; the Chief General Manager HR of Escorts underlined the importance of National Skill Development Council and NREGA, and sustaining of skills and aspirations from an organization’s point of view. Lastly, Mr. P. Raghavan, the Editor of Financial Express, said that our nation can reap two dividends because of its demography: large work force and asset accumulation by this workforce to ensure sustainable development.

The final session of BII’10 was based on the topic, ‘INDIA INTERNATIONAL: BUILDING GLOBAL LEADERS’. The session chair was Prof. D. K. Banwet from DMS, IIT Delhi, who opened the session by defining leadership, and its importance. The first speaker of the panel, Mr. V. N. Choudhary, the Executive Director of NTPC, shared his valuable experiences regarding leadership roles in organizations, especially in relation to the public cell. Ms Deepti Menon, the Director –HR, ESPN Star Sports, gave insights on leading a diverse group, and cited examples of how understanding the behavioral patterns of people from different regions and cultures, is important in the globalized industrial world. Mr. Sunand Sharma, the Chairman and country president of Alstom, stressed on factors like mentoring abilities, crises management, and team work as the pre-requisites for developing global leaders. The final speaker of the flagship event of DMS, was Mr. Abdul Aziz Seyid, the Head of Business & Domain Training in HCL, who emphasized that it was imperative for companies to focus on training & developing the base workers of an organization in order promote effective leadership skills among the employees.

Prof. Sir Jeffreys, who is presently working as Prof. of Genetics & Royal Society Wolfson Research Professor, University of Leicester, enlightened the students of IIT Delhi by delivering a highly informative lecture on “Genetic Fingerprinting: Past, Present and Future”. Prof. Sir Jeffreys was one of the first to discover split genes, and also the inherited variation in human DNA after which he went on to invent DNA fingerprinting.

Beginning the session by describing the history and science of DNA, he described how DNA fingerprinting works, how it was first moved into casework, and how technology has evolved over the years enabling creation of major national databases. These databases, he added, are proving extraordinarily effective in the fight against crime. He explained the technical methodology of how DNA fingerprinting could be used to resolve issues of identity and kinship. Furthermore, he discussed the social and ethical issues surrounding forensic DNA analysis. The lecture was followed by a question-answer round, in which he further elucidated the working of Genetic Fingerprinting.

It is aptly said that the development of a society, nation or people is closely related to its educational attainments. The Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi conducted the 2^nd international conference on Excellence in School Education focusing on the following dimensions: Leadership, Systems and Processes and Curricula, Pedagogy and Assessment. Shri Kapil Sibal, Hon. Minister for Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India was the invited chief guest for the concluding ceremony.

The Institute organized the first International back in December, 2009. Over 200 research papers including 50 from foreign countries (such as USA, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Macedonia, and Nigeria) were received for the Conference wherein 676 school owners, principals and senior teachers participated. Participation from the MHRD, Govt. of India, Govt. of Delhi, NCERT, CBSE, IIT, CII, UNICEF, the corporate world and Embassies of a few countries added to the richness of the Conference.

The session kicked off with a brief speech from the chairman Prof. Vinayshil Gautam. He summarized the outcome of the three day event into five takeaways, which according to him would make the basis of the conference next year. I’ll we quoting those verbatim

1. There is still no compulsory course on IT and computers in most of the schools

2. Any reform should be based upon the sustained commitment from the top level management of an institute rather than the government only

3. Management is the key to bring in any significant change

4. The change should have a widespread acceptance by the public

5. Teachers will only agree to any change if they can relate themselves to it on a personal level

After that elucidating speech, the hon. Minister who also used to be colleague of Prof Gautam (while they both were faculty at Delhi University a long time back), took the charge. Mr. Sibal made some very significant points during his speech such as –

With India having a diversified level of education, a uniform level of excellence can’t be achieved. By this he meant that, we can’t set the same standard for a government school and a private school.

He urged that, now the focus should be on ‘how to reform school sector so as to sync it with the economy and society.

The two most important point that the minister covered in his speech were- first, that every university should organize a training program for the officials of all the schools nearby the university. Second – There is a need of some sort of SKILLS PROGRAM for the majority of students (around 75%) who don’t go for higher studies. The program should ensure that those students would get satisfactory jobs.

Mr. Sibal concluded his speech emphasizing on the fact that almost all the schools today only think about the top 10% of the students while neglecting the rest. He called for a radical change in this mindset and announced that steps will be taken by the government in this direction by commencement of a vocational degree program from CBSE in years to come.

The session ended with a speech from Prof. S.K.Jain, Head of Department, DMS, IIT Delhi. The felicitation of Mr. Sibal was also done by Prof. Jain. All in all it a very enriching experience for numerous participants from all across the country.

Rendezvous'10 - an experience like never before

IIT Delhi organized its annual Cultural extravaganza, Rendezvous 2010 on 21st -24th October 2010. Rendezvous 2010 was unique in many senses as it is part of golden jubilee celebrations of IIT, Delhi. Many new things were organized for the first time like Stunt performances by MTV stuntmania finalists and Laser tag.

Rendezvous started in a traditional way, first night of Rendezvous was reserved for spectrum (group dance competition). This opportunity was wisely sized by Yashraj Films to release the trailer of their upcoming movie Band Baja Baraat. Cine star Anushka Sharma and upcoming actor Ranveer Singh made an appearance for that. Spectrum comes in packet with Lot Pot (Stand Up comedy), Ashok Chakradhar was one of esteemed poet present there. Over next three days IIT saw a lot more action in form of international music festivals where bands from different genre performed at IIT. RockFour from Israel, Mynta from Sweden, Maria Anadon from Portugal, DJ Destro from Spain, The violinist from Czech Republic and Francesca Cassio from Italy were some of them showing their skills in soft Rock, Jazz and fusion etc. Also Parikrama (the Rock Band) showed their Rock skills on the penultimate day.

Apart from these activities competitive events were conducted in many activities notables were choreography, fashion fiesta (lifestyle) and many more. IIT Delhi was first as overall campus but prize was given to LSR collage as IIT is a generous host. And all this was not enough; there were informal events for fun all around the campus in the form of open DJ, RDx and Coke Zone. Movies like Dabang, Rang de Basanti were screened on all the three nights. And Last but not the least was exhilarating performance by KK. It was the third time that KK performed at IIT D and the audience adored and lapped up his performance.

Using the opportunities of the 21^st century together

India has a long history of collaboration with several countries and is considered a leader of the developing world. India was one of the founding members of several international organizations, most notably the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Asian Development Bank and the G20 industrial nations. With the world's tenth largest military expenditures, and twelfth largest economy by nominal rates or fourth largest by purchasing power parity, India is considered to be a regional power, and a potential global power. It is India's growing international influence that increasingly gives it a more prominent voice in global affairs

The German ambassador to India, Bernd Mutzelburg (2006-2009), once said that India and Germany, are not just 'natural partners', but important countries in a globalised world. Germany is India's largest trade partner in Europe. As both countries are strong liberal democracies, they have similar objectives. UN reforms, fighting terrorism and climate change, and promotion of science, education, technology, and human rights, are some areas of shared interests, and collaboration between these two countries.

Adding yet another gem to the golden jubilee celebration of IIT Delhi, we had a guest lecture from Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Vice Chancellor Dr. Guido Westerwelle on ‘Common challenges, shared answers – Using the opportunities of the century together’. Mr. Westerwelle congratulated the institute on its 50^th anniversary highlighting the fact that IIT Delhi has stood for innovation, creativity and modernity all these years. He represented the students of the IIT, as fine ambassadors for this new India which so fascinates the rest of the world.

On behalf of Germany, the minister also congratulated India for the 6oth anniversary of its consitution. According to him when a country like India, with its huge regional, religious, social and ethnic diversity, chooses a free democratic system, it sends a strong signal to other societies. India showed that democracy and respect for human rights do not contradict modernization and development but are mutually dependent. Mr. Westerwelle said that competition to find ever better solutions is the driving force behind India’s creative, knowledge-based, economic development which is why the country is hughley respected worldwide.

The minister agreed that apart from sharing common values and ideas there are some major chalenges like, with the rapid growth of cities in India there is a need to create infrastructure and a reliable energy supply. Some more challenges like fighting against the climate change, disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation He also said that these problems can be solved by harnessing the long partnership between the two nations.

While concluding his speech Mr. Westerwelle stated the the countries’ election to the Security Council is a sign of great confidence by the international community. He marked this as an opportunity to consult even more closely with each other and fulfiling this major responsibility together, to the benefit not only their own people but definig a just international order that will benefit the whole international community.

Guest lecture on Social Media Marketing

At DMS, IIT Delhi, guest lectures are an integral part of regular academics. On 1^st of Oct, 2010 we had Mr. Achintya Gupta, an IIT Delhi alumnus between us. During his college days he already co authored a book on ‘Brand Management’ under the guidance of Dr. Mahim Sagar (DMS), Prof. D.P. Agrawal (Chairman, UPSC) and Dr. Deepali Singh (IITM-Gwalior).

The session began with discussion on what exactly social media is? And how social media comes into picture with due course of time. As the session progressed we came to know that social media is nothing but a platform where people can participate and present their views and share information.

During his lecture, Achintya highlighted upon a common mistake made by organisations that they target only Facebook, twitter, and blogs under their marketing strategies. Also most of the companies, who advertise their products, are unaware of the subtle differences between the objectives and services provided by these sites. Due to this lack of knowledge these firms post same material everywhere which makes it mundane and less effective.

He also emphasized that companies need to have a good and well defined social object (give people a reason to affiliate to a particular product) so as to attract more public. The later part of the lecture focused on issues like why social media is making so much buzz in the current scenario and how businesses are using social media for marketing.

The session concluded with a case study on Dell, where he talked about how dell came out strongly against the negative campaign (Dell Hell campaign) against it. The major learning after the discussion was that in today’s scenario, when a company can’t control the negative talks about its product. It should provide a platform and try to participate in those talks and figure out the loopholes in their products and services

All is all it was a very informative and enriching experience where plenty of real life examples from different domains. We came to know that nowadays companies are focusing more on identifying and igniting the passion of people, and in the meantime associate their product with the concerned theme.

The golden jubilee lecture series kick started on 27th Sept, 2010 with a lecture from Professor M. M. Sharma, FRS (Fellow of the Royal Society), Emeritus Professor of Eminence, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. Prof. Sharma is an eminentIndian chemical engineer. He is the first engineer from India to become a Fellow of the Royal Society. He has been recognized through several honours and awards. Some of them are:

· S.S. Bhatnagar Prize in Engineering Sciences in 1973,

· FICCI Award in 1981

· The Vishwakarma Medal of the INSA in 1985

· G.M. Modi Award in 1991

· Meghnad Saha Medal in 1994

· The prestigious Leverhulme Medal of the Royal Society in 1996

· H.K. Firodia Award, and

· Shatabdi Puraskar of the Indian Science Congress Association in 1999

· IIT Delhi honored him with Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in 2001

Prof. Sharma began his lecture by stating the difference between ‘invention’ and ‘innovation’. He also mentioned that in today’s world innovation and technology are probably the most loosely used words. He further emphasized on the point that technology development should be like rowing exercise i.e. synchronous collective effort rather than a relay race.

He underlined the need of a 2nd and possibly a 3rd green revolution or similar technological advancements in India, to ensure a healthy economic and social growth. Prof. Sharma also made a point that until and unless the top management level of an organisation takes interest in innovative measures, the company cannot grow.

Prof. Sharma concluded the session by giving a brief overview on the role of Open Innovation in the growth of any organisation. He also made a point by saying that, today no innovation is more important for the world then the development of young mind. All in all it was a session full of insights and it really clarify the need and scope of innovation & technology and what all constraints stops organisations from promoting innovative thinking

Guest lecture on Private Equity

Adding another pearl in its long thread of guest lectures and knowledge sharing sessions, DMS IIT Delhi organized an enriching session on 22^nd of September 2010, which was graced by Mr. Mukul Singhal, who is the member of Private Equity firm SAIF.

Mr. Mukul did his MBA from ISB Hyderabad, and is an alumnus of IIT, and has in-depth experience of the working of private equity funds, gained through his long career. He conducted the session on private equity and explained a plethora of underlying concepts and technicalities, apart from describing the modus operandi of a typical PE firm. The interactive session involved discussion on topics which include valuation techniques like Discounted Cash Flow method and Comparable method, Investment Cycle, Structure of a Fund, Portfolio of SAIF, term sheet, and Regulations of PE contract. Apart from these, he enlightened the students by relating the concepts to his own experiences, which gave valuable insights to the students.

Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi, conducted an enlightening session on ‘Quantitative Finance and changing Financial Industry’, graced by Dr. Ashwin Rao, Executive Director Morgan Stanley Research Division on 13^th September, 2010.

Dr. Ashwin threw valuable insights on the changing landscape of finance industry and spoke at length about the importance of Quantitative finance in USA and other parts of the world. He shared his experiences in the finance industry and apprised the future managers about the kind of pressure built up on the people sitting on the trading desk. He emphasized that the need of the hour is to incorporate model risk in the valuation of an asset. He had earlier taken sessions on Risk Neutral Pricing and Modelling the Mortgage Market in the Financial Engineering Workshop, held at IIT Delhi on 11 Sep. The workshop was interactive and highly informative and was attended by students of Department of Management Studies along with students and corporate from all over India.

Sure you must have heard your parents reminisce about their golden days when they used to have 10p as their pocket money and how even that money was sufficient to fetch them, what was considered to be a sumptuous meals then. Thanks to inflation, coins are a rare sight now a day. And from barter system to present scenario, change has been continual except for some irregularities in the latter part.

Not so long ago coins certainly had their part in the economy as well as common man's budget. It required a great consideration before giving away the coin to a beggar. Then came the era, when candies became the best negotiable instrument (not an instrument to negotiate as the term may imply, but it means something which has monetary value and can be exchanged easily). Not only shopkeepers exploited the situation even a bus conductor wouldn't shy away from presenting you with never-heard-of-brand candy in lieu of the chutta that he owed you. Some roadside hawkers eyed this opportunity of making money (as they say Indian blood is full of entrepreneurship) and would offer you chutta in exchange of some monetary consideration. But that era too couldn't last for long. Thanks to the "booming economy", now peace of mind matters more while selling a product, rather than getting into the hassles of arranging change for customers. You would get a direct NO if you are not carrying the change. Denominations like 1 Re and 2 Re are on the verge of extinction. Our very own DTC is reframing the charges to avoid this hassle of chutta with fares in the multiple of 5 bucks. Gone are the days when you could hear a road side beggar pleading, Bhagwaan ke naam pe ek rupiya de de. And if you somehow out of your kindness or rather in an urge to lighten you pocket you hand him a one rupee coin he would not reject it out of courtesy, but would make sure to pass a disparaging look at you.

Nevertheless, like a good optimistic person, believing in the old saying 'Whatever happens, happens for good' I am riding in this bandwagon called economic boom. Whatever "good" it may bring for me or you the clear sufferer is chutta paisa

Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi in sync with its philosophy of continuous interaction with corporate world, organized its highly anticipated annual ‘Confluence-The Idea series’, intended to bring together the corporate, the academia and the students in pursuit of discussing relevant and contemporary issues related to business and management. The topics discussed in the confluence were “Sustainable Development: Ecology vs. Economy” and “Cloud Computing: Heralding a new business era?” under the domain of operations and IT respectively.

The esteemed speakers for the operations session consisted of Subir Chowdhary, (Ex. VP, JCB India Ltd), Ashok Bajpai, (G.M. Yum Restaurant), Arun Rawal (Regional Head, Reliance petro Chemical), Hemant Mukhija (DGM, Havells), and Ajay Mittal (Manager Utilities, Honda Siel cars). The confluence commenced with a welcome note from the session chairman Prof. Ravi Shankar, faculty coordinator at DMS, stressing the need of efficient resource deployment to check pollution for ecologically sustainable economic development. The delegates discussed about the practices incorporated in their respective organisations to achieve an eco-friendly industrial model. They accentuated the 3Rs- Reuse, Reduce and Recycle as the key pillars for ecological sustainability of industrial efforts in the long terms. The panel emphasized the need of a low carbon emission based policy framework for India centric development model, including measures like energy and water conservation, waste management, reduction of greenhouse gases etc. The discussion ended with a consensus that ecology should be seen as a subset of economy and hence the focus should shift from conservation to enhancement of the environment.

The IT session on cloud computing was graced by the presence of industry stalwarts like Pritam Narotra (Senior Director, Dept. of IT), Jogesh Ramaswamy (CTO, G4S IT services), Shailesh Gupta (Global Lead- Architecture, CSC), Dhiraj Garg (GM, IBM) and Sanjay Kumar (VP, HCL). The discussion started with a basic introduction of cloud computing followed by the key parameters for cloud computing service adoption and the way in which these services synergizes with the paradigm shift in the manner in which business is conducted today, unresolved by the constraints of distance, time and nature of industry. The speakers elucidated some benefits of cloud computing like effective resource utilization, faster application deployment, reduced IT infrastructure costs, huge data management with low power input, open standard, unrestricted data access, flexible scalability and simplified disaster recovery planning among others. The panel also shed lights on the myths pertaining to cloud services and informed that how inspite of such valuable features some organizations are still hesitant to espouse cloud computing services on the grounds of data security and portability concerns.

All in all the confluence as desired served an ideal platform for fruitful interaction between industry bigwig and the aspiring managers of tomorrow.
