I-Day Marathon Run @IIT-D (from our diary of events)

INDEPENDENCE DAY MARATHON - FREEDOM RUN (dated 15th August, 2009)

HAPPY 63rd INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL !!!

Hello Dear Friends !

The marathon run organised by IIT Delhi for Independence Day
celebration was a huge hit due to active participation from all
sections of Institute. DMS won accolades for coming out with maximum
participation and the enthusiasm and zeal shown by participants was
commendable. The faculty presence and active participation also
bolstered the confidence of students which led to an all round
performance. Following students and faculty members were awarded
prizes for outstanding performance.

Female Students (UG/PG)
1. Mansi Shivnani Full time 1st year - 2nd prize
2. Ruchika Part time 2nd year - 3rd prize

Faculty
1. Prof. Kiran Momaya Faculty, DMS - 2nd prize

Male students(UG/PG)
1. Parag Part time 1st year - 3rd prize

So this time 4 Rank holders from DMS, a benchmark is created for the
first time.

Today, DMS was recognized for its enthusiasm and the sportsmanship due
to the combined effort of all of us present at the event.
I refrain from exaggerating but people were really dumbstruck to see
participation of DMS in such a strength which nearly counted 50% of
the total presence. We had people of age group between 20s and 50s
from DMS there who ran to show their spirit dressed up in DMS t-
shirts. As of me(Pryank) and Tajinder, we were the happiest souls
because our motive of maximum participation from DMS was pretty much
solved. We all must be very much thankful to Momaya Sir for everything
from starting to end for inspiring and motivating us to come forward
and create a difference in mentality of people about DMS, a difference
which was really visible on faces and words of people present there.

After Marathon, we played Volley Ball with seniors (a friendly game)
which was much more than fabulous. Then the company proceeded towards
Flag Hoisting Ceremony in SAC accompanied by wonderful patriotic
songs.

And in this way, we enjoyed ourselves and celebrated our Independence
Day. We are very much sure that whoever was absent really missed
something and we know that there must be some very urgent work lying
at other end of their life that they couldn't come today.
Let us carry forward the good work initiated through this event. I
request my batch mates to be more active in participating in upcoming
events and make them much much better than this one. Remember
together, we can and we will, make a difference.

Regards
Pryank
PLAY HARD AND HAVE FUN

Men's Basket Ball Match DMS (8-10 vs 9-11) from our diary of events

MEN's BASKETBALL MATCH (dated 9th August, 2009)

Today was the D-Day. A day when we DMSites had our first official
"Sports League" match between 810 and 911 batch.

Yesterday, we were facing player-deficiency syndrome, but today we
somehow managed to get 9 players with us (ofcourse everyone had
touched the ball after so many centuries). But we were quite confident
due to the best wishes we got from our very own Prof. Banwet who met
us just outside the BasketBall Court. He really gave us some piece of
motivation through his traditional jokes.

The Star Players in our team:

Rajiv Maskara
Sanjiv Yadav
Abhinav Mishra
Pryank Malik
Tajinder
Amit Rathi
Rahul Nema
Avinash
Shishir

Seniors were seriously smashed just by watching our team line-up. So
we got a psychological advantage initially.

We started practicing so that we could create a fearful situation for
them after watching our shoots just before the game. But when
everybody was trying very hard and innumerble times but still not even
one basket, we were dumbstruck.

Then to avoid any more insult, we called on the match. They asked for
a refree from our team, but none knew the rules so we declined their
offer by posing an excuse that we all will be playing, you take refree
from your team.

Match starts. Our 5 players in court, 4 sitting out preparing energy
drinks. Wonderful show of unity by our team, wherever the ball went,
all five running towards it. Hence nobody to defend the basket. And
they went on scoring points one over the other. We strategized our
game after every point score of theirs. But of no use, they had
counter action to every strategy of ours.
So, till half time, we lost heavily that recovery was almost
impossible. And in this half time, our team's stamina issues arose. We
substituted almost every player in first half time and consumed much
more energy drinks than our physically fit seniors.

Then, after the half time, as we got to know various rules we were
unaware of, we developed our game plan in a way that seniors couldn't
find any solutions to it. Everyone in our team was like a terminator
dropping bomb (ball).

Some pointers of the game:

1) Abhinav played excellently scoring many 2 pointers but eventually
got injured on knee.
2) Tajinder played very aggressively everytime scoring 3 pointers.
3) Rajiv played in full flow and scored many baskets for the team. He
was instructor of the game.
4) Pryank played with etiquettes, saying sorry after snatching the
ball from the rivals and ended up contributing immensely in the score
of the team. He even worked as team manager guiding the every next
move.
5) Amit Rathi played very calm and composed game almost everytime
standing in the D of rivals. This showed the attacking attitude and
eventually helped a lot.
6) Rahul Nema was always running here and there in the whole court and
helped the team in defence and passing the ball.
7) Sanjiv Yadav acted like a trump card for the team. He made a lot of
excellent and praiseworthy moves and scored maximum no. of points for
the team.
8) Avinash was rolling in between the seniors and helped in snatching
the ball and even contributed to the team by falling on a senior and
making him injured.
9) Shishir played like Superman. He was flying like fairy always
attracted towards the ball, but in vein. In the whole game, we hardly
remember any scene when he actually touched the ball but once when he
finally grabbed it and ran like a greedy dog after snatching the bone
and ended up making a foul. Everybody was so shocked to see his
glorious stunt.

Superman of the Match: Shishir
Trump Card of the match: Sanjiv Yadav
Team Manager and Motivator : Pryank Malik
Team Messenger and Cameraman : Tajinder
Match Snatcher : Avinash
Team Creative Head : Rajiv Maskara
Team Strategy Planner: Abhinav Mishra
Team Entertainment Incharge: Rahul Nema
Match Analysis : Amit Rathi

We lost the match finally, but we are proud that we played so well and
recovered heavily in the second half. We are bound to be the potential
team of our batch.

Also, we had loads of audience around the court who were provoked by
watching us to give some tips about the game and were not visible
after half time, nobody knows where and when did they run away. Some
people of our class even came to see the match, but after watching our
situation from outside, didn't dare to come inside the ground.
In essence, we enjoyed a lot and had real fun.

Note: Next match will be VolleyBall Match on this weekend. So be
prepared for the game. We will also be holding trials so as to play
the best combination in the game, the details of which would be
informed to you shortly.

PS: The major reason of our losing the match was excellent coordination in the game of seniors and lack of enthusiasm in our team of 9-11

PLAY HARD OR GO HOME

My first two weeks at DMS IITD ................exhilarating

As I stood in front of Dogra Hall, on the day of my orientation, July 24, 2009, waiting for a friend to join me, I realized how privileged I am to be chosen to study here, in DMS, IIT Delhi. It is the campus where people start their true learning and go out to be legends. The thought made me shudder. I was nervous, was apprehensive, doubtful if I could be a story that would survive, at a place where thousands of pages are added everyday, to thousands of different stories, and that live much beyond their protagonists both in terms of time and their geographical areas where they ever spend the significant portions of their lives.

Finally when we entered auditorium, we were addressed by a few eminent professors there, and why IITD is the brand in education in higher education was reinforced in our minds. Every student seemed touched and the air was electric. The realization, I am here, here to be, managed to sink in. The initial apprehensions were replaced by a whole gamut of emotions, happiness, excitement, and most importantly a renewed belief in me.

We then proceeded to register, and the process was surprisingly smooth. As I registered for the courses, I patted my back for making the right choice, of choosing DMS over other B-Schools. Here as a few electives one has the liberty of selecting a course available in IITD as well. So if a student makes up a mind to be a manager in a particular industry, he or she can go out better equipped than possible in other usual B-Schools.

The batch got together on Monday, to face the rigorous schedule that lay ahead of us. It is a wonderfully healthy mix of students that gelled instantly, being taught by the virtuoso in their respective fields, that something in me said we are going to fly high together, scale new heights.

And now I am out from the flashback though promise to return to it soon. It is actually the second weekend after my joining here and only now could I manage to find time to pen down my recollections. Life is well, hyperactive. Classes, assignments, presentations, and three birthday celebrations in the class already, life is on a roll. They were interspersed with well-meaning and the most amazingly organized sessions with our seniors. In these we have been apprised of life in DMS in general, how to handle the pressure, about the various committees so active that life can only get breathless, and the informal ice-break session with them, our mentors. In fact they seem to be managers already, with the effortless ease they juggle between the various aspects of life here. We have also tasted how to do the most important aspect of management: decision making responsibly, having given our choices of our Class Representative, again under the able guidance of our amazing seniors.

I am surprised I am saying this but academics is fun. Our professors make it so. In fact there are a couple of classes we share with research students from India and abroad majoring in technology or management courses. The ground this place provides us to build upon is incredible. And the plethora of co-curricular activities just brings us alive. I suspect these are going to be the most enriching two years of my life. DMS, IITD, we are the fortunate ones getting two alma-mater at the same time!

Tracing Italian Fashion industry

Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Prada, Fendi, Armani, Burberry, DIESEL, Hugo, Givenchy, Chanel....quite an endless list in itself, but not exhaustive.
Anyone managing to read through all those names must be knowing for sure that these are famous fashion brands, and it is highly unlikely that you haven't heard of even one of them no matter what part of the world you are living in.

The commonness doesnt end just at the fact that these are all fashion brands. There's more to it. These brands are all Italian. And somewhere they have seriously made the American fashion industry shiver at there mere size and command across the oceans.Gone are the days of American supremacy. There is no American who would prefer a Max factor over Dolce & Gabbana, a Revlon over a Chanel, a Calvin Klein over Gucci. Leave the rest of the world.!

While the fashion industry in America has grown to immense proportions, it hasn’t really been fully embedded in the country’s cultural fabric. In Italy, fashion is imbibed in the culture.
Italian Fashion is known for its sophisticated style and its elegant designs. While Italian Fashion Designers like Armani, Gucci, Prada, and Versace produce items that are not cheap, the money is worth it. After all, you are buying an attitude of class and sophistication.

While fashion and Italy seem to have been connected for centuries, the birthplace of Italian fashion can be traced back to 1951, when a fashion show was staged in Florence. From then on, Italians began to view fashion as an important way of self-expression and self-assertion. A nation that doesn’t particularly tolerate sloppy dressing, Italian Fashion soon began to take off from here.Early Italian Fashion harkened back to a time where nobility held fantastic parties and were proud of their elegance. Elaborate dresses and fine clothes were commonly worn. However, italian fashion drastically changed in the 1960s as Italian Fashion Designers began to create clothes that were still uniquely arty but more street savvy. The Made in Italy fashion style of the 1960s reached new heights culminating in the Prêt-à-porter look of the 1970s and 1980s. The popularity of Italian Fashion can be seen in the development of Milan as a fashion hotspot.Inspired by avant-garde art and cultural movements, Italian fashion has produced advanced new twists to popular fashion products. It is a confluence of creativity and technical skills of its manufacturers. And obviously one that's going to remain unmatched and unbeaten for a long time to come !!

Italian fashion industry rules the world, with revenues for 48 billion euro, 70.000 companies and 700.000 people employed, making Italy the most active in the world, in terms of quantity, second only to China, and first in terms of quality. and its going to remain unmatched and unbeaten for a long time to come. !!

TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION - Media: Custodians of the public conscience?

>“Burke said there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters' Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important far than they all.”
- Thomas Carlyle, 1841

As we take pride as the largest democracy and as a nation ready to match with the best in the world in all sectors, media has a very important role to play as a catalyst in times of constant flux. It is the Fourth Estate, the fourth axis governing the land. Media is always considered as the tool to bring answerability and transparency of governance and corporate issue to those who drive the process- People.
As number of players in the industry increases, are the media houses resorting to practices that are not properly aligned to national interest? Has sensationalism and shock media replaced content as the mainstay of media? A new source of power has emerged to the fore in India in the recent past- the corporate world, with the result that people keenly observe the happenings there. The old source of power- politics, continues to change, often leading to conflict of public interest and to harm of the nation. What stance can media houses take, in these circumstances?
In Ecclessia, we intend to ponder on these developments that have changed the face of media as we knew, and is continuing to do so; in the process, we will examine the various opportunities and trends in the sector, and also the problems and threats that loom large in front of media houses.

It is our constant endeavor to extend industry association and interaction to ensure further enrichment of academic content for the overall benefit of the students and as a consequence for the benefit of the industry, in particular and the society in general.

Speakers for our previous conclaves include:

1) Mrs. Shobha De, renowned journalist and author
2) Mr. Swaminathan Aiyer, renowned journalist
3) Mr. Hari JaiSingh, Former Editor-in-Chief, The Tribune
4) Mr. Tapas Sen, Radio Mirchi
